Until very recently I have been grain free/gluten free.  For about 2 years.  For some reason(maybe it's because I have been looking at a lot of Wayne Theibaud paintings), I have fell off the gluten-free wagon.  Usually it's my kids that talk me into going to the closest donut shop.  Recently it is ME who is suggesting donuts.

This is a tiny painting I did.  It's 4 inches by 4 inches on gallery wrap canvas.  I did something different tonight.  Usually I meticulously draw out my subject on the canvas first before I start painting.  My philosophy is that if I can figure out all the problems out in the drawing process then I will have less trouble when I start to paint.

I was just too anxious to get in the studio tonight.  I just wanted to paint but all my "work in progress" paintings were not inspiring me this evening.  So, I unwrapped this small canvas and just started going at in.  It felt great to finish a painting in one evening.  My mixed media paintings take so many steps that it is rare that I get a finished piece in one night.

#30paintingsin30days Challenge-Day 1

I've done this challenge before about a year ago.  The challenge is to paint a painting each day for 30 days.  I really should have preplanned this a little better. As of this morning, I was not sure what I was going to paint.  The reference photo was taken by my BIL Christopher Byrd and I have been saving it on my laptop for awhile now.

Part of the challenge for me is to broaden my horizons a little so I am not planning on using a lot of my same colors and color combinations for these paintings.  I started by drawing the cup on my wood panel.

I looked on my color wheel to get ideas on what colors to use with yellow ochre because that was the main color for the piece.  I picked 2 colors that matched it on the triad color wheel which were Red/Violet and Blue/Green.  It took me about 20 minutes to find my tube of Turquoise because I never use it!

I'm happy how it turned out even though I cringed a little before posting up on Facebook because it looks totally different than what I normally do.

"Small Trio", Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas 5"x7"

I was busy last week finishing up a couple of paintings for a recent show.  I decided to do a smaller painting of peppers using a trio of peppers I bought from Trader Joe's.  Once again, I am using the Liquitex Slo-Blending Medium. Wondering where this product has been all my life!  It really has been helping me.  I can't wait to get in the studio and finish up some paintings using this medium.

"Bowl of Cherries", Acrylic on Canvas, 8"x8"-SOLD!

I just finished up this painting this week.  I used a photo from a Facebook friend for the reference photo.  I have never painted cherries before so I was excited to have a new subject to try.  I have been using Liquitex Slow-Dri Blending Medium on the last couple of paintings.  I am enjoying experimenting with it.  It gives longer drying times for the acrylic paints in order to blend better.

"Zesty", Acrylic on Gallery Wrap Canvas, 8"x8"

I was asked recently if I could do some "fruit" still lifes.  This is my first piece that I completed.  I have been so busy with my kids' schooling and activities lately that it has been hard to find time to complete all of my work in progresses!

I tried to to complete this by painting it in the Flemish style of painting.  Even though I paint in acrylic and a lot of the instructions are geared towards oil, I still attempted to do a modified version of this style.  I create "underpaintings" for a lot of my pieces but I don't do it for every one.  After finishing the piece, the "art critics that I live with thought that my piece was too dark.  Take a look at the side to side comparison between the "work in progress" and the finished piece.

It really shows the difference between the two when you look at them side by side.  I rather like the revised one best.
